Helsingborgs IF are back where they belong! After finishing third in the Superettan, the second division of Swedish football, the lads from Helsingborgs managed to secure a spot in the Allsvenskan after seeing off rivals Halmstads BK in two play-off rounds. During the season our GFM talents have managed to capture the spotlights. Both Benjamin Acquah and Anthony van den Hurk can be proud of what they have achieved this season and how they have managed to secure promotion to the topflight.
In the nick of time
Helsingborgs man of the match and, in extension thereof, their man of the season was the man with the armband. Anthony van den Hurk came off the back of an incredible season, during which he netted 18 goals, to score arguably the most vital goal of his career.
After a disappointing first leg ended in a 0-1 victory for visitors Halmstads, it was an uphill battle for the former Allsvenskann champions. A second season in the Superettan loomed when Helsingborgs lead after 30 minutes was made null and void only minutes thereafter by Halmstads Samuel Kroon. However, in the dying minutes of the game, the captain stepped up and headed home the pivotal goal. Shortly after, teammate Rasmus Karjalainen scored Helsingborgs’ third of the evening, putting the game to bed.
This victory means we will be seeing our GFM talents in the Swedish topflight next season, where, in time, they will be looking to add a sixth league title to their trophy cabinet.
